Jerry Phillips is retiring effective 5/1 to join Brand Institute as president
of its newly created Drug Safety Institute (DSI). The new endeavor will
have Phillips directing risk assessment and management issues associated
with pharmaceutical product nomenclature, labeling and packaging, according
to a company news release. Brand Institute specializes in pharmaceutical
and biotechnology product name development. "At DSI, our plan is
to make the company's methodology for brand name safety testing even more
reflective of FDA's review process," Phillips said in the release.
"Also, DSI will offer a medication error prevention analysis for
new product labels and packaging and unique expertise in various risk
management strategies."
Phillips has been with FDA
since 1988. He played a significant role in implementing FDA's recent
bar coding rule. He also contributed to a 1999 Institute of Medicines
report To Err is Human, and serves as the chair of the National Coordinating
Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention. Additionally, Phillips
serves on two U.S. Pharmacopeial committees - the Nomenclature and Labeling
Committee and the Safe Medication Use Committee.
