Zovirax (acyclovir) is the most-recognized antiviral brand in the United States and
Europe. The product was recognized by 32.3% of U.S. physicians surveyed by Brand
Institute Inc. (BrandInstitute.com) in the third quarter of 2002. The product had an even
higher recognition rate in Europe, with 48.6% of physicians surveyed recognized the
brand. Zovirax is indicated for the treatment of varicella and infections caused by herpes
simplex viruses. Zovirax has a number of formulations: Zovirax Double Strength Suspension
;Zovirax Suspension; Zovirax Tablet; Zovirax Cream; and Zoviraz Ointment. All formulations
except for the ointment are marketed by GlaxoSmithKline in the United States
and Europe. In October 2001, Biovail Pharmaceuticals Inc. (biovail.com) acquired
exclusive promotion and distribution rights for Zovirax Ointment from GlaxoSmithKline
for the United States and Puerto Rico.
Valtrex (valacyclovir) is the second-most recognized brand in the United States, with
16.1% of physicians citing the product in the survey. The product is marketed by GlaxoSmithKline
(gsk.com). Only 2.4% of physicians recognized Valtrex in Europe, where the drug is in Phase III
clinical trials for the prevention of the transmission of herpes simplex.
In the United States, Valtrex is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex, the suppression
of recurrent episodes of gential herpes in immunocompetent adults, and for the treatment of herpes
zoster in immunocompetent adults.
