Most Recognized Pain and Inflammatory Brands

2,000 physicians and pharmacists from North America and Europe were surveyed by Brand Institute Inc. to determine the most-recognizable brands in the pain and inflammation category. According to results from Brand Institute's Brandpoll.com, the most-recognized pain and inflmmation drug to North American health-care professionals is Motrin (ibuprofen). Motrin is an over-the-counter drug that is indicated for the temporary relief of headache, muscular aches, the minor pain of arthritis, toothache, backache, minor aches and pains associated with the common cold, the pain of menstrual cramps, and for reduction of fever. The product is marketed in the United States by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

In Europe, the most-recognized brand for pain and inflammation among health-care professionals is Voltaren (diclofenac). The product is indicated for the acute and chronic treatment of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and the acute and chronic treatment of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Voltaren is marketed by Novartis Pharma AG (www.novartispharma.com). The product generated sales of $801.6 million in 2000.
The Brandpoll.com sample consisted of physicians of various specialties and hospital and retail pharmacists surveyed by Brand Institute (www.brandinstitute.com), a brand name identity consultancy.
