The most-recognized ophthalmic brand in North America is Patanol. The brand was most recognized by 12.6% of physicians in a survey conducted by Brand Institute Inc. in the first quarter of 2005.
Composed of olopatadine, Patanol is indicated for the temporary prevention of itching of the eye due to allergic conjunctivitis. Marketer Alcon Inc. (alconlabs.com) received approval for Patanol in December 1996.
The second most-recognized ophthalmic brand in North America is Timoptic, which 12% of physicians recognize the most. Timoptic was approved in August 1978 and is indicated for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension of open-angle glaucoma. The product is composed of timolol and marketed by Merck & Co. (merck.com).
Xalatan is the third most-recognized ophthalmic brand in North America. About 11.2% of physicians identified this brand as the most recognized. Containing latanoprost, Xalatan is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The product received approval from FDA in June 1996 and is marketed by Pfizer Inc. (pfizer.com).

The second most-recognized ophthalmic brand in Europe was the OTC product Visine, which was most recognized by 8.6% of physicians. Marketed by Pfizer, the product is used for the relief of redness of the eye due to minor eye irritations, and for use as a protectant agains irritation or to relieve dryness of the eye. Visine is composed of pheniramine and naphazoline.
Fucithalmic was the third most-recognized ophthalmic brand in Europe. This brand was most recognized by 8% of physicians. Composed of fusidic acid, Fucithalmic in the United Kingdom is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivities. The product is marketed by Leo Pharma AS (leopharma.com).
