Most Recognized Ophthalmology Brands

The most recognized ophthalmology brand among North American
healthcare professionals for the fourth quarter of 2001 is Timoptic
(timolol), with almost one-fifth of respondents recognizing the drug, according
to Brand Institute Inc., a consumer, biotech and pharmaceutical brand
name and identity consultancy. Marketed
by Merck & Co. (merck.com), Timoptic was approved before 1982 to
treat elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or
open-angle glaucoma.

In Europe, Timoptol is the most recognized ophthalmic product. Timoptol contains the same ingredient as the most popular U.S. ophthalmic brand, timolol. Timoptol was recognized by 6.3% of health-care professionals polled.
