The most-recognized gastrointestinal brand in the United States is sold over the counter for the treatment of heartburn. Pepcid was recognized by 20.1% of U.S. physicians in a survey conducted by Brand Institute Inc. in the first quarter of 2003. Pepcid is marketed by Johnson & Johnson - Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co., which is based in Fort Washington, Pa.
The second most-recognized gastrointestinal product in the United States, known by 13.3% of physicians, is the prescription drug Prevacid, which is marketed by Tap Pharmaceutical Products Inc. (tap.com).

Prilosec, which is marketed by AstraZeneca (astrazeneca.com), is the third-most recognized gastrointestinal brand in the United States as cited by 11.4% of physicians.

Nexium, also marketed by AstraZeneca, is the fourth most-recognized product in the United States by 10.8% of physicians. In Europe, Nexium is the eighth best-known brand with 4.4% of physicians recognizing the medicine.

Zantac is the fifth most-recognized gastrointestinal product in the United States by 10.5% of physicians. GlaxoSmithKline (gsk.com) is the marketer of prescription Zantac. The over-the-counter formulation of the product is sold under the brand name Zantac 75 through a license granted to Pfizer Consumer Healthcare (pfizer.com) by GlaxoSmithKline. In Europe, Zantac is the fifth most-recognized product, with 7.8% of physicians knowing the brand.

Antra is the best-known gastrointestinal drug throughout Europe, with 13.3% of physicians there most recognizing the product. Omeprazole, which is the active ingredient of Antra, is marketed by AstraZeneca in Europe under many names, including Losec, Prilosec, Gastroloc, Mopral, and Omepral. Under the Losec name, the product is the second most-recognized gastrointestinal brand in Europe by 11.1% of physicians.

The active chemical in Prevacid, lansoprazole, is branded under the trade name Lansox in Europe and is the third-most recognized gastrointestinal drug by 10% of physicians.

These prescription gastrointestinal medicines are indicated for gastrointestinal disorders such as duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and erosive esophagitis.

Brand Institute (brandinstitute.com) surveyed more than 2,000 medical professionals in North America and Europe to determine the most-recognizable brands in the gastrointestinal category.
