The most recognized gastrointestinal brand in North America is Prilosec. The brand was most recognized by 10% of physicians in a survey conducted by Brand Institute Inc. in second quarter 2006. Composed of omeprazole, Prilosec is marketed by AstraZeneca (astrazeneca.com) and was originally approved by FDA in September 1989. Prilosec is approved for indications in Helicobacter pylori infection, duodenal ulcers, heartburn, erosive esophagitis, pathological hypersecretory conditions, and acute benign gastric ulcer.

Prevacid is the second most recognized gastrointestinal brand in North America. About 9.4% of physicians recognize this brand the most; Marketed by Tap Pharmaceutical Products Inc. (tap.com), Prevacid is composed of lansoprazole and was originally approved by FDA in May 1995. The product is approved for indications in symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease, nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drug-associated gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcers, Helicobacter pylori infection, pathological hypersecretory conditions, heartburn, active benign gastric ulcer, all grades of erosive esophagitis, active duodenal ulcers, and nonsteriodal anti-flammatory drug associated gastric ulcers.

The third most recognized gastrointestinal brand in North America is Zantac. About 8.9% of physicians recognized this brand the most. Zantac is marketed by GlaxoSmithkline (gsk.com). Composed of ranitidine, Zantac was originally approved in June 1983. The product is indicated for treatment of duodenal ulcers, active, benign gastric ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and endoscopically diagnosed erosive esophagitis; maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcers patients, gastric ulcer patients, and erosive esophagitis; and the relief of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.

The most recognized gastrointestinal brand in Europe is Nexium, which is also is marketed by AstraZeneca and is a follow up on product to omeprazole. The product was most recognized by 8.2% of physicians. Nexium contains esomeprazole and was approved in the European Union in July 2000. The product is approved for indications in erosive reflux esophagitis, long-term treatment of patients with healed esophagitits to prevent relapse, H. Pylori, nonsteriodal anti- inflammatory drug associated gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Losec was the second most recognized gastrointestinal brand in Europe. Omeprazole, the active chemical in Losec, is known as Prilosec in the United States. About6.2% of physicians recognized this brand the most. In the European Union, Losec is approved for indications in duodenal ulcers, duodenal peptic ulceration, patholical hypersecretory conditions, severe reflux esophagitis, and recurrent reflux esophagitits. Losec is marketed by AstraZeneca.

The third most recognized gastrointestinal brand in Europe was Maalox. About 5.2% of physicians recognize this brand the most. Maalox is an over the counter product that contains magnesium and is marketed by Novartis Consumer Health Inc. (Novartis.com). The product is for the treatment of moderate symptoms of burning sensation in the stomach or chest area with accompanying bloating or gas pain.
